| Captains Log Summer 2024/5Welcome to our Summer 2024 LogIt has been a very busy and challenging few months for us with major fires in Grantville, Lang Lang and Koo Wee Rup just to name a few. The fire at Grantville was very intense and our Crew did an amazing job to save a house from being destroyed which was very pleasing for the owners. We provided crews and infield support staff for this fire for 2 days; it shows us that no matter where you live you cannot assume that it will never happen to you as it possibly could, and we need to be prepared for it. The fires in the Grampians and the Little Desert are still burning well and will take some time to be extinguished and we are being asked weekly to supply crews to help. Please be aware that we will always have crew members at home to support the community even when we send people away and this is my number 1 priority. The changing weather during this Summer is also making it difficult as we can from a day of 36Degrees and severe Northerly wind to Thunder and Lightning storms the next. Dry Lightning is a real concern as it can start more fires, which we saw on Sunday with 3 major fires starting on the Peninsula from lightning. In the event of these storms I ask that you remain vigilant and keep an eye on your properties for any fires started by lightning no matter how big or small they are. It is also during this period that we need to check our smoke alarm and change the battery, I have included below a detailed information sheet on how this is done. A lot has changed at the Brigade since my last Blog with the arrival of the State-of-the-art Heavy Tanker which is 4wd and carries 4000ltrs of water which is exactly what we need for the local community. Our Tanker 2 which is our old truck from many years ago will be replaced later this year with a 3000ltr Tanker will add to the strength of our fleet. I have worked on getting this second Tanker over the last 15 years and it means that no matter where our main Tanker goes within the State, we will always have a vehicle to protect the community. In the coming months we will also see the addition of a new Ford Ranger FCV (field command vehicle) to replace our old Ranger which has served us well. The purchase of this vehicle by the Brigade has come with the support of local businesses and major sponsors to raise the funds for this. We appreciate all of you very much for your ongoing support to the Briade which enables us to purchase of additional equipment and vehicles to be able to provide the best support to our local community we possibly can. Stay Safe as we still have a warm period ahead of us. Regards |
